“When I first discovered what the Pantone Color of the Year was, I was in awe,” says Sylvie Rouaix, Vice President of Product Development and Brand Marketing, who develops the collection. “Emerald happens to be my favorite color. I think it’s mesmerizing—it carries energy and has soothing qualities.

“[To prepare,] I started dreaming in color. I laid out a vision for eyes, portraying strength and modernity. I then created the spirit of a supporting ensemble, see-through textures, touches of lilac and peach—the perfect neutrals complementing the amazingly rich emerald shades.

How did you get the name Emerald?
I was born in May, so Emerald is my birthstone. My mother, who is a color consultant, is interested in eastern religion, and in the Buddhist and Hindu traditions green is the color of the heart chakra, which represents love and compassion. And my parents thought it sounded good with Carroll!

Do you own a lot of emerald jewelry?
I was gifted a lot of emerald jewelry as a child, but unfortunately I lost most of it. Real emeralds are not for young children! Many people don’t know this, but because of their rarity, fine emeralds, carat for carat, can be two to three times as valuable as diamonds!

Does your name often get butchered on your cappuccino cup?
Yes! Sometimes I just pick a random easy name to give, which can be sort of fun, but if I’m with friends they always give me a hard time when I do this. Maybe they think I’m being a traitor to my own name? Or, more likely, they find it funny to watch me have to spell it out to a confused barista.

Have you met any other Emeralds?
No…but I hope to!

Pamela Love began designing jewelry out of her Brooklyn apartment in 2006, and soon her pieces, inspired by nature, astronomy, and botany, caught the attention of numerous fashion editors and retailers. The Sephora Glossy caught up with her at her Manhattan studio to talk about the Pantone Color of the Year, Emerald.

Are there a lot of emeralds in your jewelry?
They’re in the eyes of our snake rings and in the feathers of our peacock rings. We use a lot of malachite too, which is also green, and sometimes we use emerald as an embellishment on it—for a little sparkle.

Do emeralds have any special significance?
It’s Cancer’s birthstone, which is my husband’s sign. And emerald is the stone of the goddess Venus, so it’s thought to preserve love.

How sweet!
It’s really a good luck charm. We’re really into magical things here. I read that it also acts as a tranquilizer from troubled minds.

You’ve got a lot going on in the next few months, so does that mean you be using more emerald soon in your design?
Yes! Next season we’re doing more, with pave diamonds, rubies—that whole family of stones.

Do you wear emerald?
I have green eyes, and emerald jewelry close to your face helps pick up the green in your eyes. Not that I’m walking around with giant emeralds around my neck. So, also emerald eye shadow!
